Academic research on the themes of stakeholders and sustainability has grown separately, but it is still unclear how stakeholder studies have been approached in the context of sustainability, that is, in a joint way the two themes. In view of the above, this study aimed to analyze the state of the art of publications of international and national scientific articles, published from 1998 to 2011, which addressed stakeholders in the context of sustainability. Methodologically, bibliometric techniques were used in a total of 155 identified articles, of which 125 were international scientific articles and 30 were national articles. In the results, it was observed, when comparing international and national publications, that there are gaps in five lines of research: ethics, general, corporate governance, corporate responsibility and sustainability; and that there are also gaps identified in the international survey, based on topics that have been studied in Brazil, such as corporate governance and performance, corporate responsibility and public policies in sustainability.
